Log File Use the Log File options if you want a log file to be written to disk every time you perform a Find or Replace operation. The log file consists of the Results as shown in the list box in the Main Window, modified according to the Prefix and Suffix you choose.
- Save Results to log file Checkmark this and enter a valid file name in the edit box to write a log file to disk after every Find or Replace operation. Enter a complete path and file name, that is, drive, folders (path), and file name, e.g., C:\myfolder\log.txt. Use any file extension you prefer, keeping in mind that Windows associates some file extensions with programs. NOTE: If you do not need a log file, do not checkmark this option, else you will slow down operations with disk writes, and if Back Logs is checkmarked too, you will create many unnecessary log files.
- Prefix Enter a prefix, e.g., “<<<“, to mark the beginning of a found or replaced word or expression in a Results line written to disk. On screen, you can use colors to mark words and expressions. To mark words or expressions in files, use a Prefix and a Suffix. To write the Results to the log file without modification, leave Prefix and Suffix blank.
- Suffix Enter a suffix, e.g., “>>>“, to mark the end of a found or replaced word or expression in a Results line written to disk.
- Back Logs Checkmark this to keep the previous log when a new log is written to disk. Old logs are kept as “copy0000 log_filename”, where 0000 is a number in sequence, and log_filename is the log file name you entered, as described above. Old logs are kept in the same folder as the new log. The folder is determined by the log file name you entered, that is, by the path you included in the name. In the example above, “C:\myfolder\log.txt”, the folder is “C:\myfolder”.
Results Saved to Disk You can save Results to a file on disk. All text in Results is saved, as are all Options and entries in Find, Replace, Folder(s), and File(s). You can save Results at any time by choosing Save or Save As from the Main Menu. Results files are saved with the file extension “.fkr” (Finders Keepers™ results).
- Ask on New, Open, or Exit Click the checkmark on to be asked if you want to save Results any time you click New, Open, or Exit on the Main Menu while there are existing Results, or entries that have been modified.
- Open last Results on start Click the checkmark on to have Finders Keepers™ open at start-up the last saved Results you were working with when you previously exited the program.
Persistent File List In order to get Results, Finders Keepers™ must first compile a file list according to your entries in Folder(s) and File(s). Usually this takes no time at all. However, if you are repeatedly searching thousands of files with the same entries in Folder(s) and File(s), you may want to have the file list persist after Find or Replace operations to save a little time.
- Use for Find/Replace When this is checkmarked, the same file list, made according to Folder(s) and File(s), persists between operations, that is, it is used repeatedly, until one of the following events occurs: a Results file is opened, an operation is interrupted by clicking the Stop button, the entry in Folder(s) is changed, or the entry in File(s) is changed. After such an event, the file list will be compiled anew in the next Find or Replace operation.
