Starting Places There are several places in Windows from which you can start Finders Keepers™. The most commonly used places are items on the Taskbar Start menu and a shortcut on the Desktop. You may establish these starting places by checkmarking the following:
- Taskbar: Start | Programs Place a menu item for Finders Keepers™ on the Taskbar’s Start | Programs menu. (The Taskbar contains the “Start” button.) The added menu item will be “Finders Keepers”. Select it to start Finders Keepers™.
- Taskbar: Start | Find Place a menu item for Finders Keepers™ on the Taskbar’s Start | Find menu. Checkmarking this option also places the same menu item on the Windows Explorer’s Tools | Find menu. On both menus, the added item will be “Words In Files”. Select the item to start Finders Keepers™.
- Shortcut on Desktop Place a shortcut for Finders Keepers™ on the Windows Desktop. Such shortcuts are icons. The Desktop is the main window of Windows. Double-click on the shortcut to start Finders Keepers™.
Explorer’s Shortcut Menu Windows Explorer has shortcut menus that enable you to manipulate files or to invoke applications that operate on files. A shortcut, or context, menu for files pops up when you right-click on one or more selected files in the right pane of the Windows Explorer. The files shortcut menu contains such selections as “Open” and “Copy”. You can add the Finders Keepers™ selection “Find Words & Expressions” to the files shortcut menu.
- Add “Find Words & Expressions” Checkmark this option to place the menu item “Find Words & Expressions” on Windows Explorer’s shortcut menu for files. Then, when in the Windows Explorer, right-click on one or more selected files and choose “Find Words & Expressions” on the shortcut menu that pops up: Finders Keepers™ will make a file list from the selected files in Explorer. Find and Replace operations will use this file list. To see the Finders Keepers™ file list made from files selected in the Explorer, click the button that looks like the following:
Updates to Windows Explorer During Replace or Touch operations, Finders Keepers™ performs actions, such as creating backup files or changing file dates, that Windows Explorer needs to know about. Keeping Explorer notified takes considerable time in some operations. If you do not have Explorer open to look at it while you are using Finders Keepers™, you can minimize notifications for speed. Click on a choice:
- Minimize for speed Notify Explorer only minimally, principally at the end of operations that affect file information.
- Maximize Keep Explorer notified of changes as they happen.
