Options - Find
These options control Find operations. In addition, the option Reading Files affects Keepers|Make.
Reading Files Choose how Finders Keepers™ treats files when it reads them for Find, Replace, and Make-index operations. Click one of these choices:
- Auto-detect text or binary Let the program decide whether a file is a text file or a binary file.
- Auto-detect and skip binary Auto-detect text or binary files and skip the binary files during Find or Replace operations.
- Force text-file reads Force the program to treat all files as text files.
- Force binary-file reads Force the program to treat all files as binary files.
Archives Finders Keepers™ can perform Find operations on files inside Zip files.
- Search in Zip files Check mark this to search in Zip files that are in Folder(s) and contain File(s) that you designated. You can view found files that are inside Zip files directly from Finders Keepers™. This option is for Find operations only: Finders Keepers™ does not Replace words or expressions inside Zip files.
- Search nested Zips (limited) Check mark this to search inside Zip files that are inside Zip files. This is a limited option. The nested Zip programs will be searched; but you can not view the files within them directly from Finders Keepers™.
- Skip self-extracting zips (.EXE) Check mark this to skip finding and searching EXE files that are self-extracting zips.
Such files are executable, and they are usually used for installing their contents onto your computer, not for storing data.
If you do not have data stored in self-extracting zip files, check mark this to speed up zip searches.
- Omit error messages Check mark this to omit error messages during searches through zip files.
Finders Keepers does not search zip files that have outdated formats or password protection.
Most error messages are for instances of such files. After noting such instances, you may want
to turn off these error messages, especially if you want to run long, unattended searches.
Approximate Search
- # Errors Enter a number of allowable errors, or discrepancies, for Approximate searches. Type in a number or click on the up-down arrows. As you change this number, another number beneath it, labeled “Maximum length of Find”, will change. The latter number is the maximum length of text that you can enter for a Find operation. If you enter too much text in Find in the Main Window, you will get an error message. Reduce the size of your text in Find or reduce the number of Approximate Errors here.
Work Folder Enter the name of a folder where Finders Keepers™ can do its work. The Work Folder is used chiefly for temporary files, in particular, files temporarily copied out of Zip files for Find operations. You can use the folder where Finders Keepers™ is installed, or “c:\windows\temp”, or any folder you choose. Enter a folder’s name by typing it in, or by selecting it from the drop-down list you get by clicking the down arrow, or by using the folder browser you get by clicking on the button beside the Work Folder entry. Finders Keepers™ will make, when needed, a subfolder within the Work Folder and name it “FK”. Most temporary files are created in “FK” in subfolders such as “FK\fkNNNN”, the “NNNN” being a number that gives the subfolder a unique name, or “FK\path_from_zip”, the “path_from_zip” taken from the zip-stored path of a file unzipped into the subfolder “FK”.
