Backup Folder File Names

How files are named in the Backup Folder

Files are copied to, or created in, the Backup Folder during Replace operations. The files are either copied original files without replacements or created altered files with replacements, according to your settings in Options - Replace. Files in the Backup Folder are named after the complete paths and names of their predecessors in the Replace operation, with drive symbols ( : ) changed to hyphens.

For example, suppose your Backup Folder is named C:\Backup, and you make replacements in a file named:

E:\Business\Letters

The file in the the Backup Folder will be named:

C:\Backup\E-\Business\Letters

If, in Options - Replace|Backup Folder Duplicates, you chose Rename “Copy0000 filename”, multiple Replace operations on the same files will create files in the Backup Folder with “Copy0000 “ to “Copy999999 “ prefixed to their original names.

For example, again suppose your Backup Folder is named C:\Backup, and you perform four Replace operations on a file named:

E:\Business\Letters

The files in the the Backup Folder will be named:

C:\Backup\E-\Business\Letters

C:\Backup\E-\Business\copy0000 Letters

C:\Backup\E-\Business\copy0001 Letters

C:\Backup\E-\Business\copy0002 Letters

NOTE that the file without “copy0000 ” prefixed to its name is the most recent backup. Of files with “copy0000 “ prefixed, the most recent backup is the file with the largest number in the “copy0000 “ prefix. Thus, in the above example, copy0002 Letters is the backup from the most recent Replace operation.
