Table of Contents

Insert a table of contents into the document at the position of the editor’s cursor.

Create Styles for Headings

Before you can insert a table of contents, you must first create paragraph styles that represent the outline levels that you want in your table of contents. You create paragraph styles in Edit | Edit Style. Paragraph styles that are to be used to generate a table of contents must be named “heading n”: n is a number representing an outline level in the table. For example, if you intend to have three outline levels in your table of contents, you must create paragraph styles named “heading 1,” “heading 2,” and “heading 3.”

Apply Styles to Your Document

When you have the appropriate paragraph styles, the next step is to apply those styles to paragraphs in your document that are headings (or indicators of levels within the document). To apply a style to a paragraph, place the editor’s cursor on the paragraph, and then choose a style from Paragraph | Style. If the Format Bar and Format Bar Stylesheets are visible, you can choose the style from the drop-down list of styles.

The following illustrates an example of three outline levels for a table of contents in a writing that is divided into parts, chapters, and sections.

Part I – parts are formatted with the “heading 1” style.

Chapter 1 – chapters are formatted with the “heading 2” style.

Section a – sections are formatted with the “heading 3” style.

Insert the Table of Contents

Once you have formatted the headings in your writing with the appropriate styles, place the editor’s cursor where you want the table of contents to be. Then select Insert | Table of Contents from the menu.

The editor will automatically update the table of contents when repagination occurs. See Repaginate.

Format the Table of Contents

When you insert the table of contents, the editor will automatically create paragraph styles for the table that correspond to the styles you created for headings. The automatically created styles will be named “toc n”: n is a number corresponding to the “heading n” that you created. You can modify the formatting of the “toc” styles by using Edit | Edit Style.
