Multiple-Word (Boolean) Searches

You may use "AND," "OR," and "NOT" to create multiple-word (Boolean) searches.  "AND," "OR," and "NOT" in this use are known as Boolean operators.

Jack or Jill

finds pages that contain "Jack" or "Jill"

Jack and Jill

finds pages that contain both "Jack" and "Jill"

Jack not Jill

finds pages that contain "Jack" but not "Jill"

When you search for multiple words without using any Boolean operator, your words are treated as if they were joined by "OR."

Jack Jill

finds pages that contain "Jack" or "Jill"

You may use parentheses to group words together in order to clarify which words belong to a particular Boolean operator.

(Jack not Jill) and water
finds pages that contain "Jack" and "water" but not "Jill"

You may use the asterisk as a wild card "*" to find variable words.

hill*
finds pages that contain words starting with "hill"
